Balloon launch honors Mother Teresa on 100th anniversary of her birth
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa should serve as an inspiration for the faithful to follow her example of love and service, the rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception said last week. "Our celebration today is meant to focus on the virtues which Mother practiced in her life, and to encourage us to imitate in our own lives those same qualities," Msgr. Walter R. Rossi, the National Shrine's rector, said during an Aug. 26 Mass marking Blessed Teresa's 100th birthday. Pope, at audience, says St. Hildegard of Bingen is model for today
St. Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century German mystic, used her gifts to build up the church at a time of trouble similar to today, Pope Benedict XVI said. St. Hildegard is relevant today because of "her love for Christ and his church, which was suffering in her time, too, and was wounded also then by the sins of priests and laypeople," the pope said. She also is a good model for today because of her "love for creation, her medicine, her poetry and music that is being recreated today," the pope said Sept. 1 at his weekly general audience in Castel Gandolfo.
