Maryland parish hosts candlelight vigil to pray for kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls
Surrounded by rural countryside in an outlying suburban community north of Washington, D.C., St. Paul Church in Damascus might seem to be halfway around the world from Nigeria. But on June 10, that parish united with the African nation in a special way, as it hosted a candlelight vigil to pray for the 276 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped almost two months earlier by the Islamic terror group Boko Haram.

Archdiocese of Washington launches interactive program to explore local Catholic sites
The Archdiocese of Washington is bringing back an interactive summer program called Faith Quest that encourages people to connect to their faith by making pilgrimages to local Catholic historical and spiritual sites.

Cardinal Wuerl and Sacred Heart parishioners mark anniversary of election of nation's first Catholic bishop
On May 18, 1789, approximately two dozen priests then serving in the new United States of America met at the chapel in White Marsh, Md., and had an election at which they nominated Father John Carroll to be the first Catholic bishop of the United States. That fall, Pope Pius VI appointed Bishop Carroll as the nation's first Catholic bishop to lead the new Diocese of Baltimore, which at that time encompassed the Catholic community living in all 13 original states.

At St. Paul's in Damascus, Cardinal blesses new parish center
Six years ago this summer, Father Joseph Pierce arrived as pastor of St. Paul Parish in Damascus, taking note of a unique sense of fellowship among members. "From the day I walked in, I witnessed the parishioners' incredible spirit of welcome and joy as people of God shown not only to me but also to one another," Father Pierce said.

St. Pius X Church in Bowie launches parish renewal program based on best-selling book
When I was named pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Bowie, in the summer of 2008, I was excited to return to the parish in which I served as associate pastor in the late 1980s. I inherited a parish with a foundation of strong lay ministries and lay involvement thanks to my predecessor of 21 years, Father Paul Hill.

'Light is On' Lenten campaign encourages Catholics to go to Confession
Lent - the 40-day penitential period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving - continues until Good Friday, April 18. Easter this year will be celebrated on Sunday, April 20. As it has done for the past seven Lenten seasons, this year the Archdiocese of Washington is again sponsoring "The Light Is On For You" campaign to encourage the faithful to receive the Sacrament of Confession.

Anna Robinson, longtime educator, honored as 'great lady, one of God's troops'
Anna Robinson, a longtime educator and administrator at St. Margaret of Scotland School in Seat Pleasant, was honored Feb. 23 when the parish dedicated is community room as the "Anna T. Robinson Community Room."

Father An Vu, pastor of Our Lady of Vietnam Parish, dies at age 55
Father An Ngoc Vu, a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington for nearly 20 years who served as pastor of Our Lady of Vietnam Parish in Silver Spring since 2008, died of cancer Feb. 5. He was 55 years old. Cardinal Donald Wuerl celebrated a Feb. 11 Funeral Mass for Father Vu at Our Lady of Vietnam Parish.
