Balloon launch honors Mother Teresa on 100th anniversary of her birth

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa should serve as an inspiration for the faithful to follow her example of love and service, the rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception said last week. "Our celebration today is meant to focus on the virtues which Mother practiced in her life, and to encourage us to imitate in our own lives those same qualities," Msgr. Walter R. Rossi, the National Shrine's rector, said during an Aug. 26 Mass marking Blessed Teresa's 100th birthday. "Mother summoned us to examine our lives in light of Gospel values, and today she calls us to do the same as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth."

Bethesda parish hosts forum for at-large Montgomery County Council candidates
Twelve of the 14 candidates vying for the four at-large seats on the Montgomery County Council addressed how they would represent the poor, aid the homeless and serve the mental health needs of county residents at a recent forum. At the Aug. 25 event, candidates presented their prepared responses in two brief sets of remarks to more than 100 voters gathered at St. Jane de Chantal Parish in Bethesda.

Mother Teresa stamp to be unveiled Sept. 5 at National Shrine
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has marked mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa with a number of events, including hosting the Sept. 5 unveiling of a commemorative stamp in honor of the nun. On that day, the 13th anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, apostolic nuncio to the United States, will be the principal celebrant and homilist of a 2 p.m. Memorial Mass in the Upper Church. The Mass will precede the U.S. Postal Service's unveiling of its commemorative stamp of Mother Teresa in honor of the centennial of her birth.

As primary and general elections near, Catholic voters in Maryland face many key issues
This fall, voters in Maryland will be going to the polls to select the next governor and members of the state's General Assembly. Once elected, these lawmakers hold sway over several issues affecting residents including the definition of marriage, support for the poor, education and promoting the dignity of all life. The Maryland Catholic Conference advocates on behalf of the Church's position on public policy by lobbying legislators, testifying on proposed bills and informing voters on key issues.

Bake sale, fundraising drive supports woman's call to be a Little Sister
The first donation that Elise Maloney received to help her pay off her $75,000 dollars of school debt so she can become a Little Sister of the Poor came from Joseph Coleman, an elderly resident living at the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Washington, a home for the elderly poor run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Portugal native named pastor of Christ the King Parish
Archbishop Donald Wuerl has announced that Father Jose Maria Cortes, a member of the Priestly Fraternity of the Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo from Portugal, will serve as pastor of Christ the King Parish in Silver Spring, effective Aug. 9.

Catholic Charities program seeks online votes to win grant and help low-income families
The Montgomery County Family Center (MCFC), a program of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, hopes to win $15,000 from Safeway and Pepsi in an online voting competition to increase its educational outreach. Three awardees will receive the $15,000 prize to make their idea for improving education a reality. Anyone can vote for their favorite cause up to three times each day until Aug. 26.

Maryland Catholic Conference director receives pledge that new health plan won't fund elective abortions
Officials from the Maryland Catholic Conference recently received assurances from the Maryland Health Insurance Plan that federal funds will not be used to cover elective abortions under their expanded health plan for individuals unable to afford or qualify for health insurance.

Six African men ordained as new Josephite priests
In a stirring liturgical celebration, six African men were ordained recently as new Josephite priests. The prayerful and joyous liturgy was attended by a standing-room-only congregation of Josephites, family, friends and parishioners at Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian Church in Southeast Washington.ÊBishop John H. Ricard, the bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Fla., and a member of the Josephites, was the main celebrant at the Mass. The new Josephite priests are Father Godwin Akpan, Father Francis D. Asomkase, Father Joseph Gbenga Benjamin, Father Stanley K. Ihuoma, Father Kenneth I. Keke, and Father Kenneth C. Ugwu.

Archbishop Wuerl urges Knights to be 'champions of the new evangelization'
Knights of Columbus are called to evangelize, to be charitable and to serve as instruments of God's love, Archbishop Donald Wuerl said Aug. 3 at a Mass opening the Catholic fraternal organization's 128th annual supreme convention. "We are to be heralds of the Gospel of Life - from conception to natural death; witnesses to the splendor of Truth - that there is an objective right and wrong; ministers of the sacrament of charity," Archbishop Wuerl said in his homily.
