As the nation marks 25 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will toll its largest bell, The Mary Bell, 25 times at 9:37 a.m., the exact time American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon located just five miles from the National Shrine.
At 5:15 p.m., a solemn Mass to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 will be celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, in the Basilica’s Crypt Church. Prior to Mass, the National Anthem will be sung, accompanied by a Color Guard from the Arlington County Fire Department.
The Mass, open to the public, will be a solemn remembrance to pray for those who died, honor the brave first responders and members of our Armed Forces who answered the nation’s call in its aftermath, and entrust to the mercy of God all affected by that tragic day.
