Pope John Paul II gives Archbishop Philip M. Hannan a pat on the shoulder following a luncheon at the archbishop's residence during the pope's 1987 visit to New Orleans. Archbishop Hannan, a World War II paratroop chaplain who befriended and secretly cou nseled John F. Kennedy during and after his historic run for the White House as the first U.S. Catholic president, died Sept. 29 at age 98.
