Two New Shepherds for Washington
On July 7, 2026, Bishop Gary R. Studniewski and Bishop Robert P. Boxie III were ordained as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Washington during a joy-filled Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Washington Cardinal Robert W. McElroy served as principal ordaining bishop, joined by Cardinal Wilton Gregory and Bishop Mark Brennan as co-consecrators, before roughly 2,500 family members, friends, clergy, and faithful from across the archdiocese. Bishop Studniewski, a former U.S. Army chaplain and pastor of St. Peter's on Capitol Hill and the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, chose "My Grace Is Sufficient for You" as his episcopal motto. Bishop Boxie, the longtime Catholic chaplain at Howard University, chose "O Lord, Give Me Wisdom." From the reading of the papal mandates and the laying on of hands to the anointing with chrism and their first blessings to the People of God, here's a look at the day in photos.
