St. Aloysius marks 300 years as a landmark of faith in Leonardtown
St. Aloysius Parish in Leonardtown, which traces its founding to 1710, recently celebrated its tricentennial. Archbishop Donald Wuerl celebrated a June 26 Mass to mark the parish's 300th anniversary. The present red brick church, a landmark of faith in Leonardtown, was dedicated in 1962 by then-Archbishop Patrick Aloysius O'Boyle, who led the archdiocese from 1948-73 and presided over a period of great growth following World War II. Soon after becoming Washington's first resident archbishop, Archbishop O'Boyle began integrating local Catholic parishes and schools. For the past 125 years, a bell at St. Aloysius has called generations of parishioners to Masses there.
