Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Alvaro Corrada del Rio of Tyler, Texas, to head the Diocese of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The appointment was announced in Washington July 6 by the apostolic nunciature. Puerto Rican-born Bishop Corrada, 69, succeeds the retiring Bishop Ulises Aurelio Casiano Vargas, 77, who has headed the diocese since it was established in 1976.
